What is Myotherapy?
Some people are naturally skilled at giving a great massage. In the right hands, any therapeutic massage can be incredibly beneficial and healing. You may chose to be a massage therapist with little training, but Therapeutic Massage formally is a certificate level qualification in Australia.
To specifically understand “treating” a person with massage techniques, it is good to gain further skills in assessment and methods of treating. Study at Diploma level is the basic requirement for a person to become a Remedial Massage Therapist. “Remedial” refers to “science-based” techniques within the massage framework.
Myotherapy (the name in the state of Victoria) is Advanced Diploma level, developing further skills in anatomy, physiology, clinical impression, and treatment methods. Usually students are encouraged to spend more time assessing and less time treating but be more targeted. This puts us closer to physios and osteopaths in the way we approach treatment and the techniques and skills we use.
In saying this. ….
There are many different emphasises and trends within the massage, physiotherapy, osteopathic and chiropractic worlds. At the moment, for example, Dry Needling is popular amongst all these professions, as it can be a very effective method to utilise. (note, we are NOT acupuncturists – see later discussion on this topic)
Ongoing training and short courses are standard for people in these professions, along with an interest in keeping up with scientific research and the experience of others.
